This Week in Book Covers 25th August - 29th August

Merrick (Vampire Chronicles #7) by Anne Rice

Well, on the plus side, it’s not the over generic, could-be-anything-because-my-name-is-gold covers we see on a lot of the series. Of course it still looks like a story about a carnival so it’s not exactly informative. But then, if The Vampire Chronicles actually had covers that reflected their plots they’d be blank. Or show a poor, exhausted man buried in very very dull biographies,

However, this carnival attendant does seem to be rather extremely pale if it’s supposed to be Merrick - or even David for that matter - both of whom are POC.

Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution by Keith R.A. DeCandido

Sadly boring - after all it’s a book of the TV series so we get the cast on the cover to make it clear that it’s official. Dull dull dull. Abbie does seem to be giving the cameraman some serious evil eye over something though. I reckon he spent hours getting them into that pose and she’s miffed that this is the best he could come up with

The Kraken King and the Empress's Eyes (Kraken King #7, Iron Seas #4.7) by Meljean Brook

Oh my precious Iron Seas with your pretty pretty Steampunk book covers, what happened? Why are we having a close up of the moss covered boiler in the basement? This is neither steamy nor punky and looks vaguely like an abandoned industrial greenhouse. Again you see to have tucked a random cog into a corner just to remind us it’s steampunk.

Oh dear gods, really? Let me get my big bag of links because this one’s a doozey. First of all, she’s squatting. Why is she squatting? Why would anyone squat like that, on pavement? She’s not even looking for something on the floor or hiding behind something - she’s just decided to kneel (with the classic leg stuck out to one side randomly pose). Because… reasons. And her knee must be hurting like hell there especially since it’s not like her skin tight vinyl trousers are giving her any padding at all. Speaking of - skin tight vinyl trousers? Why? Not only does Sam (nor the book tube set to maximum cleavage) not wear this in the book, I can’t imagine anyone wearing this to work-  let alone a police detective. especially since everyone keeps complaining about how cold it is. Now this is Australia and they’re Australian so when they say “cold” we are allowed to look sceptically at them and make doubting noises under our breath - but if she’s cold why would she wear this?

But I would pay good money to see her try to stand - in those trousers, with her knee gone to sleep and in this ridiculous high-heeled shoes; I don’t care what woo-woo Sam has, she is not going to be able to stand without help and maybe a crane.
