True Blood Season Five, Episode Eight: Somebody That I Used to Know

True Blood opens at the hospital where the man Sam caught is being taken away from the hospital by Andy in handcuffs.  Luna is extremely upset because to her, they are everywhere.  Sam tries to calm her by saying that he is on it that she has police stationed outside her door, and then leaves for the station.  This does not calm Luna down and she shifts into Sam and promptly passes out.

The vampires are still higher than hell from their night of debauchery, save Eric who is looking at them in a shocked state.  He has to ask Bill what happened and Bill tells him that they saw Lilith, but Eric is not convinced because they are high.

Jason confronts Sookie who says she is dumping all of her fairy light because she is a freak and wants to be normal.  Jason tells her that if she were normal that she would never have met Bill and he points out that they had real love, which is something not everyone gets. He reminds her that she got to talk to their grandmother one last time and that doesn't happen to normal folk. He even points out that her fae power is a legacy of their parents and that nothing is going to feel right until they find out who killed them. Once again, someone is there to save Sookie from herself. I know that he is her brother, but at the same time, it irks me that someone is always there for her when she is resistant to spending even two second focusing on someone else.  Given her penchant for getting into trouble, how much sense did it make to get rid of the one thing that gives her power?

Back at the hospital, Luna is coming to and is shocked to see herself as Sam.  She walks out of the hospital telling the cop to mind his own God damned business.  When Sam Trammell is given the opportunity to try something new on the show, he really invests in it.  Watching him sashay out of the hospital actually had me cracking up a little bit.

At Fangtasia, Jessica is doing her thing, when a man starts to come on to her, tempting her with his blood.  I still very much like this new naughty Jessica, who is in control of her wants and needs.

At the authority compound, the vampires are discussing how they never really believed in Lilith until last night. Of course, Russel steals the moment by saying "God has the most beautiful tits I've ever seen."  He then declares that he is born again along with Steve Newlin.  Salome believes that this is a sign that Roman's death has been sanctioned by God. Steve is sent off to gather up a few humans and Eric bows out saying that he has had enough fun for one night. Before leaving, he and Bill share a very pointed look, but Bill remains with the other vampires.

Alcide is very busy getting his wolf thing on and can I say that I am impressed with the fact that True Blood actually decided to depict cunnilingus, because this is an act that is highly erased from sex scenes in the media.  Sex is often portrayed strictly from the male gaze, and this often precludes acts which give women pleasure.

Salome sets up a late night snack for Bill and when he refuses, she demands that he feed on this woman as God has commanded.  Bill says that he has fathered children and cannot take this woman away from them, but Salome counters with the fact that he didn't make them vampire and keep them with him forever. We get a flashback to Bill's daughter's deathbed.  She asks him to make her like him, because she does not want to die, but Bill says that he cannot because immortality is a curse. She cries that she can feel herself rotting and begs him, as Bill pulls away from her.  Salome says that God chose to make vampires in his own likeness to transcend human notions of morality and that to refuse God's gift is blasphemy.  Bill decides to drink from the woman, as Salome says a prayer of thanks.

Hoyt arrives at the hideout of the human shifter killers and finds that Jessica has been silvered to welcome him to the group. Apparently, they targeted Jessica because she broke Hoyt's heart. They show her a gun with six shots of wooden bullets and then hand the gun off to Hoyt. They start to pressure Hoyt to kill Jessica, saying that it will feel good and then walk out of the room, leaving him alone with her.

Sookie and Jason head to the fae club hoping to find the vampire who killed their parents. When they are resistant, she asks loudly if they have any idea what it is to have someone you love murdered by a vampire.  Umm hello, Claude's sister was killed by Eric last season -- of course they know -- but Sookie cannot be sensitive when she wants to get her own way. Claude tells them that they have a bond and that he cares about her.  I for one have no idea why he would actually give a damn about little Miss Self Important.  They agree to meet at the bridge where her parents where murdered.

Lafayette is driving back and sees the wounds on his lips from them being sewn shut. When he pulls out the first aid kit behind the visor, he finds that the kit has a picture of Jesus on it. With tears in his eyes, he pulls out some V and applies it to his lips so that they can heal.  Jesus appears in the car beside him and he says thanks.  When Lafayette asks if Jesus is real, Jesus says it doesn't matter and offers him his hand. This scene was so brief, but it touched me because it reminded us of everything Lafayette lost and how deep his pain goes.

At the station, Sam and Andy are questioning the suspect but when he refuses to talk, Andy asks for a minute alone with him. Andy says it's illegal but he leaves anyway. When Sam starts to undress, the man says "I ain't no fucking homo" and Sam responds, "neither am I," before turning into a snake. I guess it would have been too much to ask for True Blood to just have one stinking episode without some homophobia thrown in.

In the outside area of the station, Luna comes in looking like Sam, asking for Sam. This throws Andy for a loop.  When Andy and Luna walk into the room, Sam says that they have Jessica, but when he sees Luna he is shocked.  Luna says she doesn't know what happened and that the next thing she knew, she was him. Luna is upset because she thinks she is going to die and is worried that she cannot shift back.  Andy looks up and says, "I hate this God damned town."  I just want to pause for a moment to once again say that Sam Tramell is absolutely awesome.

At the bridge, Claude tells Sookie that matter is simply energy that never completely dies. Claude tells Sookie that she should try and become her mother and experience what she experienced through her eyes.  They join hands and Sookie is taken back to the night her parents died, but instead of channeling her mother, she channels the vampire who killed her parents. On the bridge, Claudette appears and uses her fairy power to blast the vampire, which knocks Sookie out.

Jessica begs Hoyt to take off some of the silver, but Hoyt says that Ray is right because she is already dead, and shooting her wouldn't be murder.  Once again, Hoyt brings up the fact that Jessica and Jason had sex and broke his heart.  Hoyt asks why Jessica does not love him anymore and Jessica says that she wanted to love him, and even prayed for it to come back but that it didn't.   Hoyt holds a gun to her head and in the other room, Reggie hears the gun off. When Reggie walks into the room, Jessica kills him but she cannot leave because it's daytime. Because Hoyt has no phone, he is forced to leave Jessica behind to go and find help.  When she thanks him, he simply says, "fuck you."

When Lafayette returns home, Arlene and Holly are waiting for him, because Arlene wants help with Terry.  I love that Lafayette says that he is not in the helping business anymore, but they follow him and tell him about Terry's curse. Lafayette tries to dismiss them saying that Terry is off his meds, but Holly counters saying that there are things in this world which are beyond explanation and that if this isn't real and Terry is off his meds, Terry believes that this is true.  Holly suggests that they sit down with Terry because he knows that Lafayette is a medium and that if he tells him that the curse will be lifted, Terry should be fine.  I like the fact that Holly pointed out that there are many things that defy explanation but I am pissed that the primary line of the conversation is that Terry must be off his meds.  Arlene says that it won't matter if it is nonsense and that Terry will be at peace. Lafayette resoibs that he is tired of doing this shit for free and that they will have to pay for it.  Arlene is shocked but says fifty dollars to which Lafayette counters with 300.  Once again, I say good for Lafayette, it's about time he stopped being people's servant.

Andy, Luna and Sam rush into the room where Jessica is waiting for help.  Jessica is shocked to see two Sams, but Andy explains that one is actually Luna.  Jessica is upset to learn that Hoyt is not with them.  Luna smells a woman in the room and that she has a lousy diet and is a smoker. Luna grabs her stomach and doubles over screaming help me.

At Sookie's, she tells Claude that she was the vampire, but Claude says that it is impossible because fae cannot be in contact with vampires. Sookie agrees because she cannot hear their thoughts.  Claude starts freaking out because the elders are going to be furious about this.  Jason goes on a rant as Sookie remember that Claudine called the vampire Warlow.  Unfortunately, Claude has no idea who this vampire is.

At Fangtasia, Tracy, a woman that Tara knows from highschool comes in for a drink and tells her that now that she is a vampire that she is a member of two minorities. The racism increases, as Tracy tells Tara that she is relieved to see her holding down a steady job because her mother used to drink. Tara tries to bring the conversation to an end, but Tracy complains about the drink she is given and says that Tara is uppity. Tara warns her that if she says anything else racist that she will rip open her heart and fry it up with some grits. Pam shows up and apologizes for Tara but, Tara says that she connected with Tracy's boyfriend well enough to fuck him.  When the argument persists, Pam tells her not to get uppity with her. Yeah, I didn't like Pam's intervention in this scene whatsoever.  Tara was handling her business just fine and  the racist connotations of a White woman telling a Black woman not to get uppity are just horrendous.

J.D and Alcide prepare to fight for alpha, but when J.D. suggests that they track, capture, and kill a human, Alcide bows out. When J.D. says that he is going to hunt the kid regardless, Alcide attempts to stop him saying that he is a drug addict and a traitor to all wolves.

Nora is praying when Eric pops by for a visit. He tells her that what is happening is insane and that everything has clouded her mind. Was I the only one who heard Skaarsgard's accent slip during that line?  Nora insists that Lilith inhabits the compound, but Eric says that she doesn't exist and that Salome chose this path for her. Eric says that Godric was there and was sickened by this.  Nora is not impressed because she feels that the Godric he saw was a perversion, who Lilith would have been more than happy to stake.  Overcome, Eric chokes her.

Back at Sam's, Luna is resting on Sam's lap, as he assures her that she is not going to die because she has too much to live for. They both apologise for everything that went wrong and Sam jokes saying that she is handsome.  As he leans in to kiss her, Luna shifts back to herself and then is promptly sick.

At Fangtasia, Pam approaches Tara to say that they have to talk about her attitude. Down in the basement, Tracey is handcuffed and struggling.  Pam tells Tara that Tracey is here because after the shit she was slinging, Tracey owes her. Tara is shocked because she thought Pam was upset, but Pam says, "you don't know me that well. My mad face and my happy face are the same."  Pam glamors Tracey into believing that she is Tara's slave, tells Tara to have fun and walks out of the room. Again, this is another no, because it comes to down to a White woman teaching a Black woman how to negotiate racism.

J.D quickly catches up the kid but Alcide is right behind him.  The two get into a fight which Alcide promptly looses, not being able to keep up with J.D. because of the V.  When J.D grabs a rock to kill him, the pack catches up.  Martha makes it clear that killing Alcide tarnishes the whole pack and that she is standing up for all of them.  J.D. decides to let Alcide live, but tells him to find himself a new pact.

At Arlene's, Patrick and Terry show up in a rush and Terry becomes upset when he learns that Arlene lied to get him there.  Holly and Arlene explain that they are going to try and help them break the curse. When Patrick calls bullshit, Terry says it's for real.  Lafayette starts off obviously faking the seance, until he suddenly feels something and realises that Zaafira is there.  Zaafira inhabits Lafayette's body briefly and tells Terry that he has to kill Patrick.  It seems that the only way to lift the curse is if one of them dies.  Patrick gets up and runs out of the room.

On the road, Hoyt flags down a truck and is excited that he sees a friendly face, until the person holds a gun on him. At home, Sookie is brushing her hair in the mirror, until she feels a presence.  A ghostly figure tells her that he is coming for her.  At the compound, the vampires meet to discuss how to crush the mainstreamers.  At the end of the table, Steve and Russel are flirting, but Salome is not impressed with the disturbance. Bill suggests that they simply blow up the True Blood factories, because that will force the vampires to feed on humans. Eric is shocked and asks what Bill is doing and Bill simply says, "evolving." It looks like the friendly alliance between Eric and Bill might well be over now that Bill is one of the converted.

I do think that is one of the better episodes for the season thus far but it's fair to say that quite a bit of the glamor seems to be gone from True Blood.  I don't care about what is going on with Terry, Sookie or the shifter issue.  The most interesting plot line is at the authority compound and at this point, I have given up hoping that anything good will come from Tara becoming Pam's child. What are your thoughts on this week's episode?
